Spring Training Salute
During Spring Training, the Salute to Veterans game at McKechnie Field honored our military service members. A pre-game picnic, exclusive batting practice experience, t-shirts, and reserved seats benefitted veterans from Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve and It's About the Warrior Foundation. A member of the Coast Guard was also chosen to sing the National Anthem.
Stand Down Assistance
Pirates Charities supported the Veteran's Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania by taking part in their annual Stand Down event. Stand Down is a day-long event led by the U.S. Department of Labor, with the goal of reaching out to Veterans in need. A pre-game donation drive was held on Federal Street to collect blankets, hats, gloves, scarves, and towels for homeless Veterans.
"More than 260,000 veterans and their families reside in Southwestern Pennsylvania, including 8,000 children. That's one of the largest concentrations of veterans in the United States," said Patty Paytas, the Pirates Senior Vice President of Community & Public Affairs and the Executive Director of Pirates Charities. "These soldiers, in addition to those currently serving, are a significant part of our community and our Pirates fan base. We believe in what they have done and are doing for our country, and consider it our responsibility to provide whatever services we can to help them here at home."
Support Of Local Bases
Each year the Pittsburgh Pirates provide support to our local Pittsburgh Military Bases through participating in various events and welcoming service members to games and events.
